Morning Mindset: 5 Tips to Power Up a Positive Mind

Do you wake up first thing in the morning with the thought of “oh not another day,” or have the feeling of dread come over you as you think about all the things you need to complete?

Well those daily morning negative thoughts and emotions can eat away at your productivity, creativity and inspiration, stopping you from living your best life. Often we don’t realise the momentum of these negative thoughts until it’s too late, when it’s become an ingrained bad habit.

Unfortunately those negative thoughts have way more power than the positive.

Frustrating right?

So why are we way more prone to waking up with negative thoughts than positive? This is because of the way our brains are hardwired.

Our brains are wired to protect us and to keep us out of harms way. Which means we are constantly on alert scanning our environment for threats and dangers keeping us in a vigilant state by paying more attention to negative experiences. This is why when we wake up in the morning, we focus on the negatives about what could happen in our day. We are priming ourselves to keep us safe.

Long term this negative bias doesn’t exactly make you the happiest person in the world. You immediately create emotional resistance from the get go and that isn’t good for anyone. The good thing is you can change this old ingrained habit, by refocusing your mindset as soon as you wake up!

Try these 6 powerful ways to kickstart a positive mindset

1. Create a mental checklist of all the things you are looking forward to in your day.

Whether that is as small as grabbing that morning coffee, saying hello to a work colleague, an opportunity you have, seeing the blue sky, listening to the birds or listening to a podcast on your drive. Focus on finding positive things to look forward to morning noon and evening. This creates excitement and anticipation that creates a positive mindset and momentum for the day ahead.

2. Name and feel four things you are grateful for.

Before you get out of bed, place your hand on your heart and breathe into your heart space for five breaths. Then name four things you are grateful for today.

Thank you for….
I am grateful for…
I appreciate…

Really feel the gratitude and appreciation you have for these four things by being with these feelings for a few minutes before you get on with your day. Connecting with your positive heart emotions floods your body with oxytocin (love and happiness hormone) instead of cortisol and adrenaline counteracting the fight/flight response. Instead, you can expect to feel peaceful, relaxed and at ease opposed to stressed out and anxious! What would you prefer?

3. Put on some morning music.

We all know the role music plays in the way we feel, so to kickstart those groggy mornings listen to a playlist that gets you feeling inspired, energised and loving life. Put on some music that makes you want to move your body like a woman who has lost her mind – because when you lose your mind you drop down into your body and far far away from the negative momentum of your mind.

When you change the way you hold your body with movement, you change your physiology. Try it, I guarantee that grogginess will dissipate real quick.

4. Channel Tony Robbins and use incantations.

Tony Robbins takes using affirmations to a whole new level. Instead of simply stating positive affirmations in the morning, he uses incantations to evoke the energy he wants to experience by embodying it. The way to do this is to create statements that supports you in living your best life and then state them out loud with momentum, body and energy.

Our brains are wired into thinking and believing negative things about ourselves like I am lazy, I am not good enough, I am stupid etc that we often don’t stop to reflect on how these old beliefs and thoughts are disempowering us.

To do this, first create powerful statements that supports your growth and the life you want to live.

Some of my examples are:

  • I eat to fuel my body, not satisfy an appetite.
  • I am energised and excited about my life.
  • Perfect health is my divine right.
  • What I do today shapes my today and creates my tomorrow.
  • I will give myself pleasure for the tiny progresses I make each day.
  • The past does not define my tomorrow.
  • I love my life.
  • All I need is within me now.
  • I control how I feel.
  • I can change my state in an instant.
  • I invite miracles into my life.
  • I am a powerful force in the world and here to contribute and make a difference.
  • I am worthy.
  • I am capable of anything I put my mind to.
  • I am good enough.

Then state them out loud over and over again, using the depth and soul of your voice and body until you feel energised and excited. When you match the feeling and energy with the affirmation, you change your neurology, rewiring your brain for the positive.

5. Tune out from social media.

If you get triggered into negative thoughts and emotions by scrolling through your instagram or facebook feed – don’t do it! Until you get on that wave length of positive flow, and inspiration CONTROL what information you are choosing to take in!

I know for my personally social media is a big trigger for feelings of unworthiness, so if I am already in a low mood I’ll make sure I abstain from all social media until my mind is back on track.

Use these 5 top tips daily to retrain your brain by focusing on the information that is going to support you in living your best life, cultivating a positive mindset for growth! Your life is a reflection of what you think and feel, you owe it to yourself to feel good about who you are, your life and possibilities of the future.
